Canadian Children Book Centre Awards Finalists

2009 Canadian Authors and Illustrators Shortlist Announced

$110,000 in prize money will be awarded to Canadian children's book authors in the coming months thanks to the 2009 Canadian Children's Book Centre Awards.

Some of the prestigious awards offered include the TD Canadian Children’s Literature Award, the Marilyn Baillie Picture Book Award, the Norma Fleck Award of Canadian Children’s Non-Fiction and the Geoffrey Bilson Award for Historical Fiction for Young People. The winners will be announced in November 2009.

TD Canadian Children’s Literature Award

Established in 2005, the TD Canadian Children’s Literature Award honors all children’s books, in any genre, written by a Canadian. The award is one of the most distinguished awards of its kind and provides the winner with $25,000 prize money; however, all finalists will be awarded with $2,500.

This year, the five finalists include the following exceptional titles:

1. Death in the Air written by Shane Peacock

2. Libertad written by Alma Fullerton

3. Shin-chi’s Canoe written by Nicola I. Campbell and illustrated by Kim LaFave.

4. Thing-Thing written by Cary Fagon and illustrated by Nicolas Debon

5. Word Nerd written by Susin Nielson

The Marilyn Baillie Picture Book Award

Picture books can be a great way for children to explore the world of literature and the Marilyn Baillie Picture Book Award honors this genre with the winner receiving $20,000 in prize money. The Marilyn Baillie Picture Book Award is sponsored by TD Bank’s Charles Baillie and named after his wife, Marilyn.

1. Chicken, Pig, Cow written and illustrated by Ruth Ohi

2. It’s Moving Day written by Pamela Hickman and illustrated by Geraldo Valerio.

3. Mattland written by Hazel Hutchins and Gail Herbert and illustrated by Dusan Petricic.

4. Shin-chi’s Canoe written by Nicola I. Campbell and illustrated by Kim LaFave.

5. Thing-Thing written by Cary Fagon and illustrated by Nicolas Debon.

Norma Fleck Award for Canadian Children’s Non Fiction

The winner of the Norma Fleck Award for Canadian Children’s Non Fiction will receive $10,000 for its contribution to Canadian nonfiction. The Norma Fleck award was established in 1999 by the Fleck Family Foundation in honor of Norma Fleck.

This year, the five finalists include the following:

1. The Bite of the Mango written by Mariatu Kamara and Susan McClelland

2. Inuksuk Journey: An Artist at the Top of the World written and illustrated by Mary Wallace

3. No Girls Allowed: Tales of Daring Women Dressed as Men for Love, Freedom and Adventure written by Susan Hughes and illustrated by Willow Dawson

4. One Hen: How One Small Loan Made a Big Difference written by Katie Smith Milway and illustrated by Eugenie Fernandes

5. Royal Murder: The Deadly Intrigue of Ten Sovereigns written by Elizabeth MacLeod.

Geoffrey Bilson Award for Historical Fiction for Young People

Historical fiction can be a hard genre to master, especially when it comes to children’s historical fiction. The Geoffrey Bilson Award for Historical Fiction for Young People honors this talent with $5,000 prize money.

The talented five finalists for 2009 include:

1. The Ancient Ocean Blues written by Jack Mitchell

2. The Apprentice’s Masterpiece: A Story of Medieval Spain written by Melanie Little

3. Child of Dandelions written by Shenaaz Nanjji

4. Greener Grass: The Famine Years written by Caroline Pignat

5. The Landing written by John Ibbitson.
